Independent Component 2

LITERAL
(a) I, Sabrina Colin, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
(b) Diana Santiago- Contact Info: (909) 837-0557
(c) Worked with Diana in the "Heavenly Treasures" store.

INTERPRETIVE
Heavenly Treasures runs with the mission of helping artisans in developing countries gain the most profit from their hand made products, in order to build more financially and spiritually stable lives for their families. Each product made reflects the heart and soul of one or more artisans around from the world. In the store, each product has a tag that has a small background on the artisan woman or man who made it and so you know exactly when your money is going. All the money made from the purchase of the product goes directly to its maker and the organization runs on fund from donations and fundraising. Assistance is provided to artisans in the areas of Business Development, International Marketing, Leadership Training, Product Development and Spiritual Guidance.

I mainly worked a lot with Diana in the store, but also got a behind the scenes look at the organization and the store itself from Diana's personal experiences working with Heavenly Treasures, including her trip to Guatemala.

APPLIED This organization is a perfect example of my both my answer 1 and answer 3, helping artisan women around the world become successful entrepreneurs. In my answer 1, I explain that that the creation of stable, well paying jobs is vital to the success of women entrepreneurs, which is exactly what Heavenly Treasures does. They give the women a direct source of income, being able to sell their products at a higher price and providing them with an otherwise inaccessible consumer market, which is where I spent my component hours working. With answer 3, the training and education of women in order to succeed in business is also important. When the organization conducts their mission, they make sure that an expert in the field of entrepreneurship and business is available and hold small class sessions to explain the basics and most valuable techniques so that they are not solely relying on Heavenly Treasures for income.

Blog 15: Independent Component 2 Approval

1. I have applied for the Spring Term at Cal Poly and, as recommended by Mrs. Pittman, I plan on getting a class that closely relates to the basics of International Business. If I am unable to get a class, I will work on a hands-on project with my mentor Peter Kilduff at Apparel Merchandising and Management, a department in Cal Poly.

2. I will attend and pass the class in order to meet the 30 hour requirement, but I am still not sure when the class will be and how often it will be held.

3. I am just beginning to become familiar with my topic, so taking a class on the foundations of International Business will not only help me better understand my topic, but also better understand my EQ. If I end up doing my hours with my mentor, I believe working in the AMM department will help me put my EQ into action in a vague way, or at least help me to do so in the future.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

The healthy man does not torture others.  Generally, it is the tortured who turn into torturers.” -Carl Jung

1. For the 30 hours required for our first independent component, I will be take a Young Scholars class at Cal Poly. The class is called Mind, Brain, Behavior: An Integrated View. It is a 10-week Psychology course that meets once a week for 3 hours and 50 minutes. The topics that are covered in the class vary from nerve cells to the bio psychology of ethics. The class was recommended to me by Mrs. Hunzeker during my Senior Meeting.

2. Meeting for about 4 hours a week, the 30 hour hour requirement is sure to be met. I plan to collect my notes that I will be taking during each class and all handouts or worksheets we are given. Of necessary, I can also bring in the 3 mid term exams taken throughout the course. We are also expected to write a 3-6 page book review(as listed in the class syllabus attached on the left), which I can use as additional evidence to show the completion of the 30 hours.

3. My topic is psychopathology. In the recent sources I have used, there are mainly examples and interviews based on research from professionals in psychology. In this class, I will gain a more scientific perspective on my topic. Also, there are othe related disorders that will mainly be covered in the seventh and eighth week of the class. I noticed that each week covers a component that I have found to be a branch from the symptoms of psychopathy based on my previous research. For example, Drugs and the Brain in week 3 and Hormones and Behavior in week 6. I recall a direct relation between substance abuse and the development of psychopaths described in Without Conscience, a vital piece of research I have been using. One of the main characteristics of a psychopath is having strong and emotionless sexual desires, explained more in week 3 of the class. I will become more well rounded on my topic, not only knowing about one aspect of it.
